Loneliness effects

Loneliness effects – the UK has recently appointed a Minister for Loneliness… well done, since the effects of loneliness on health are bad.

A minister for loneliness, following the project of the late MP Jo Cox, was appointed recently in the UK. Tracy Couch said she’s proud for taking on this generational challenge. There are 9 million people affected by loneliness in the UK, young and old. 500 thousand don’t interact with anybody for weeks! Effects of loneliness on health suggest that it can be deadlier than obesity and it’s harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day! The potential harmful effects have an impact on longevity and a research reported that loneliness can raise levels of stress hormones and inflammation, which can increase the risk of heart disease, arthritis, type 2 diabetes and dementia.

But people can be socially isolated and not feel lonely; they simply prefer a more “private” life. Also, people can feel lonely being surrounded by lots of people. Especially when some relationships are not satisfying. I, for example, need lots of time alone. but I don’t feel lonely. I was not always that way. It started a few years ago. I enjoy a lot being with friends and I love talking to people when I travel, but still, I need time alone.

What to do if someone feels lonely? BBC has some tips, like getting a pet, joining gym and voluntary work, for example. What do you suggest? Do you like being alone?

  1. Hello my sweet Denise!
    I don’t like being alone!!
I don’t have time feeling alone with 3 grandchilds running here at home!Lol!
But if some times I’m,i drive to the seashore and take pictures!
Love your flat shoes, the beautiful bag and the necklace!!
You look so beautiful in the pictures!
I really enjoyed your visit to the science museum!
Wishing you a lovely new week!Filakia!!❤️💋

  2. I really loved your outfit. Those flats are so adorable and I love how they match your maxi skirt in print if not in colour. A denim jacket is a great item to finish off every outfit.

Very interesting topic about loneliness. I do agree that a person may not feel lonely when they are alone, but instead feel lonely when surrounded with others. As you say, it is all individual. I think there is no substitute for real relationships and friendships. People today sometimes forget that…and modern life only contributes to loneliness.

I prefer to spend time alone, but mostly because of the chronic pain I have to deal with. It is very hard to be around people when you’re in pain, I find it more and more draining. When I’m in pain, I prefer to be by myself.

  3. Your gingham skirt is beautiful! :)

It’s interesting to have a minister for loneliness! I hope it helps make some changes though. I’m an introvert so I value my alone time, but it’s good to get out and spend time with others too.

Hope that you had a nice weekend and your week is off to a good start. I’m just hoping for a less stressful week this week, haha!

  4. Yes, loneliness is no joke and I personally thinks people become more and more lonely due the times we live in. Cell phones replace REAL human interaction, etc. People do not talk to each other anymore, I MEAN REALLY TALK. Oftentimes a text replaces a phone call, and so forth. It’s very saddening. Great and informative post, Denise!
    Happy Monday, babe!

  5. I read something about this recently and heard about it–it’s sad. But, stress, loneliness can definitely be deadly. That is why it’s so important to have positive people surrounding you, in addition to having daily affirmations, it helps. I also agree with V, technology is often a replacement for human interaction for some people, more so now with social media platforms. And, for children being raised in the world of social media there has been recorded high stats with bullying and loneliness, on a whole other level.

  6. Wow I love this gingham print shoe! It’s great to hear that the UK is implementing this, I watched the documentary about Carole Joyce Vincent, lady who died and was found 4 years later in her apt, that’s how lonely she was! That was a very sad story. I agree, there are lots of things to deter loneliness, like joining a social group or enlisting in a hobby class. Great blog dear!

  7. This was such an interesting read… I had never heard of a minister of loneliness and I do think it is important to think about this. I am just like you and I enjoy spending time by myself. Thank you for sharing this!

  8. I’m slightly lonely. I work from home and I’m in a long distance relationship so I don’t interact with a lot of people on a daily bases. I get down sometimes but I have a lot of friends and I’m always trying to go to different networking events. I can’t believe over 500 thousand don’t interact with anybody for weeks. I can believe it can be deadly but had no idea it could be more deadly than smoking a pack a day. I’ve been going to the gym 5 days a week for the past few months and I feel a lot better. I love this Vichy Skirt on you and what sweet shoes. Have a great week Denise.

  9. I am like you, I do need alone time, big time. I do well with long on my own but loneliness can be a problem when one feels disconnected and I think in many ways we are all feeling a bit disconnected. Love those red plaid ballet flats and the bag too. What great accessories really pulls your look together.

  10. I’m as introverted as they come, and I really need to spend time alone in order to relax. That being said, I have often felt lonely in the past as well. I think these days I have a much better balance, but I might change over time and need to spend more/less time alone in the future.

Ti auguro una bellissima settimana, tesoro!

  12. Wow! A minister for loneliness? I had no idea. That’s very interesting! And I’m like you, I absolutely need alone time. A LOT of alone time, haha. I like people but get exhausted from the interactions very quickly. So, I don’t feel lonely at all when I’m alone…more relieved. But everyone is very different!

I hope you’re having a wonderful week, Denise!

  13. I love your flats – so so cute.. And about the first part of your blog. Minister of loneliness? I have to admit it’s first time to hear about it. We don’t have anything like that here in Croatia. I like spending time alone, if I don’t have at least a few alone hours every day, I just go crazy..

  15. Lonliness sure is a killer here in the UK. With busy schedules, a very much lack of genuine lack of relationship/bond time in the home, even between blood related family members, people often resort to the internet for comfort. What they unfortunately find at times can be damaging. We all need to make the effort to be in sync with the people around us. We all have a part to play.

Great post, Denise! You sure are looking great also.

    Funmi xx

  16. Very well said Denise – loneliness can be a truly debilitating problem and it’s good to see some more action.

I’m just catching up on your last few weeks of posts now! I’ve not had much time for reading blogs – looking forward to seeing what you’ve been up to :) x

  17. A minister of loneliness? That’s…interesting. I think social medias play a huge part in the increase of loneliness. More and more people are shunning real life interaction for social medias. The world gets closer with the internet and social medias but people also grow more and more apart from each other.

  18. Check, check for this amazing outfit! Pun intended!
Yes loneliness is a growing health hazard and is surging in it’s ubiquity.
I think a good deal of it is social media. Many people I know and observe are on their screens so very often, that they do not interact with people in real life.

Many people, especially creative people, do enjoy a relatively private life. And for them, it can be quite healthy. It’s always difficult finding the right balance for each individual.
Thank you for addressing this very important topic. You look beautiful, as always.

  19. Super interesting post as always. As an only child I need that time for myself or I go crazy. I also love blogging and working as a photographer because I can do it on my own. I work much better doing things by myself and online. However, too much loneliness can cause depression and loneliness can sometimes be a result of depression. So, I always encourage people to watch out for these signs and say hi to someone or even just smile can make someone’s day. Thanks for this post. Have a wonderful weekend. Love the pics too. xoxo Cris
