Carrots, Eggs or Coffee?

Carrots, Eggs or Coffee? This is a tale of feelings, a story I shared here some years ago. It may sound silly, but I like it and wanted to show it again. It may look a bit long, but worth reading, in my opinion; it goes in a fast way! :)

CARROT, EGG OR COFFEE TALE

Friday Feelings

A YOUNG WOMAN WENT TO HER MOTHER AND TOLD HER ABOUT HER LIFE AND THAT SHE WAS FACING SO MANY PROBLEMS. SHE DIDN’T KNOW HOW SHE WAS GOING TO SOLVE THEM. SHE WAS TIRED OF FIGHTING AND STRUGGLING.

Her mother took her to the kitchen and filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. When the water started boiling, she placed carrots in the first pot, eggs in the second and coffee beans in the third. She let them sit and boil and didn’t say a word.

In about twenty minutes she got the pots’ contents and asked her daughter: “Tell me, what do you see?

“Egg, carrots, and coffee“, she replied.

She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots and the egg. The carrots were soft. Then she took the egg and broke it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted it. The daughter then asked, “What does it all mean?”

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity – boiling water – but each reacted differently.

* THE CARROT WENT IN STRONG, HARD. HOWEVER, AFTER BEING SUBJECTED TO THE BOILING WATER, IT SOFTENED.

* THE EGG HAD BEEN FRAGILE. ITS THIN OUTER SHELL HAD PROTECTED ITS LIQUID INTERIOR. BUT, AFTER SITTING THROUGH THE BOILING WATER, ITS INSIDE BECAME HARDENED.

* THE COFFEE BEANS, AFTER THEY WERE IN THE BOILING WATER,  CHANGED THE WATER.

Which are you?” the mother asked the daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond?”

– ARE YOU THE CARROT, THAT STARTS THE JOURNEY HARD AND ENDS UP LIKE A SOFT THING?

– OR THE EGG THAT STARTS WITH A MALLEABLE HEART, BUT CHANGES WITH THE HEAT? DID I HAVE A FLUID SPIRIT, BUT AFTER A DEATH, A BREAKUP, A FINANCIAL HARDSHIP OR SOME OTHER TRIAL, HAVE I BECOME HARDENED? DOES MY SHELL LOOK THE SAME, BUT ON THE INSIDE AM I BITTER?

– OR AM I LIKE THE COFFEE BEAN? THE BEAN ACTUALLY CHANGES THE HOT WATER. IF YOU ARE LIKE THE BEAN, WHEN THINGS ARE AT THEIR WORST, YOU GET BETTER AND CHANGE THE SITUATION AROUND YOU.

  1. As Finns are some of the heaviest coffee drinkers in the world, usually we actually top the consumation lists of coffee, I have to say I’m coffee. This was a great post, and it put a smile upon my face, thanks for that! :)
Also, thank you for stopping by my blog and giving feedback on my baby girl’s nursery! I really appreciate it!

  2. What an enjoyable post to read Denise. Life is all about changes and experiences. How we react to those situations and experiences certainly affects our outcome and perspective.Loved the analogy of the carrot, egg, and coffee bean. Have a marvellous weekend. /Madison

  3. To tell you the truth, I’m not sure what I am…I would love to say coffee because that is what I want to be, I think it is what we all aspire to be…someone who manages to keep the world from changing them. However, I must admit that in life I have been both the carrot and the egg….Still, I think that at least a few times I have also acted like coffee…and I hope that in future I will become coffee:)

  4. Ommmg this is now one of my favorite posts. This story is so inspiring and kinda cute too 😀 I just love that story and I think it’s something that we can relate in real life too. :) Also I think that the quotes goes perfectly wit that story. Great post Denise! ;D

  5. Great story, Denise. Makes you think about yourself, doesn’t it. Well what am I? Honestly, I don’t know, not a carrot, not an egg and not a coffee bean, maybe something in between, I dunno. There are some things we can’t change that makes us bitter like injustice, there are some things we are not able to change that has made us wiser, I think it depends on the subject, one can’t standardize it. Happy weekend, my dear friend. Oh btw, you are half an inch taller than me 😉

  9. I loved the story! hadn’t heard it before so thank you for sharing it! of course I would like to say I’m always the coffee bean ( I don’t drink coffee, haha, have never even tried!) but I guess it would not be the whole truth. I can be and have been the coffee bean but I’ve also been the carrot and the egg at some point, depends on the situation and how difficult it has been. we’re all constantly growing and evolving though so I hope the future will bring less (or no) carrots and eggs and more coffee beans! 😉
